Perched above the James River in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood, historic Hollywood Cemetery is one of the nation’s most remarkable burial grounds. Founded in 1847 and designed by landscape architect John Notman, this 135-acre rural cemetery is known for its rolling hills, winding paths, and river views.
Hollywood holds a rare distinction: it’s one of only three sites in the U.S. (alongside Arlington National Cemetery and United First Parish Church) where two U.S. Presidents are buried. Both James Monroe and John Tyler rest here.
The cemetery was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. It remains one of Virginia’s most visited historic sites, offering visitors a striking mix of natural beauty, architectural artistry, and American history.
