The Lost Town of Burton
Originally known as Powellsville, the little town of Burton boomed at the confluence of Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River. During the mid-1800s, the Georgia Gold Rush brought treasure hunters from around the country, and many chose to settle here as mining opportunities began to dry up.
Chichota Cottage
A few hundred feet north of the main lodge on Jekyll Island, a pair of stone lions stand guard over an empty plot off Riverview Drive. The home that once stood here, Chichota Cottage, was a lavish retreat for the wealthy Gould family.
The Tilley Bend Witch
A little further South, the Tilleys and the Stanleys were enmeshed in a battle of their own, one that stretched back a dozen years across the Blue Ridge Mountains. A series of vicious attacks between the clans resulted in more than a dozen deaths and gave rise to the legend of the Tilley Bend Witch.
The Rock Oven of Altamaha Swamp
Some haunted places in Georgia date from a time long before European settlers arrived. If you travel down the Altamaha River, just a few miles from the Edwin Hatch Power Plant, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a limestone cliff set just above a small lagoon. This ridge was once home to a secretive tribe of Native Americans known only as the “Tama” by neighboring tribes.
The Screven Spook Light
If you follow State Road 84 out of the tiny hamlet of Screven, you’ll likely miss the intersection with Bennett Road. A winding dirt path that trails off into the scrub, Bennett is unremarkable save for the fact that it leads the lonely traveler to Milligan’s Crossing.
